A freedom of information request by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has highlighted the shocking number of UK drivers who have had points put on their licence as a result of taking to the roads while uninsured.
In total, one in 200 UK licence holders (226,803) have been penalised for driving without insurance.
The figures showed the most at-risk category for this type of offence is male drivers aged between 17 and 24. This group is four times more likely to drive uninsured than female motorists in the same age range.
IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "The most concerning fact is that this could just be the tip of the iceberg, as these numbers only represent those who have been caught and penalised."
He added the costs of uninsured driving add a considerable burden to the premiums of law-abiding motorists and it is unacceptable that this group's failings end up costing all vehicle owners.
