The Volvo V40 has secured a prestigious five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and smashed the record for the overall best score awarded by the institute at the same time.
Maximum points were achieved in the pedestrian protection category, while protection for adult passengers was the highest ever recorded at 98 per cent.
Furthermore, the V40 scored maximum points for its safety assist criteria.
"We are very proud to have one of the world's safest cars and we're taking yet another important step toward our 2020 target – that nobody should die or be seriously injured in a new Volvo," commented Thomas Broberg, senior technical advisor for safety at Volvo Car Corporation.
He added that the aim of the firm was to deliver one of the most intelligent and safest cars in its segment.
As part of this month's ongoing Euro NCAP testing round, six vehicles in all have achieved five-star ratings – the V40, Audi A3, Ford B-MAX, Isuzu D-Max, Kia Cee'd and Renault Clio.
