Individuals planning to sell their car privately have been reminded of the dangers associated with allowing strangers into your home when taking viewings.

According to vehicle recovery specialist Tracker, more than £7 million-worth of vehicles were stolen across the UK in 2012, with many of these cars taken when thieves have broken into a property to get the keys.

Stuart Chapman, police relationships manager for the company, said it is important anyone selling a car does all they can to prevent opportunistic thieves from gaining access to their home, while ensuring there is someone else other than just themselves in the house when carrying out viewings is advised.

"It's not uncommon for thieves to break into a home to retrieve car keys, so don't make yours an easy target," Mr Chapman concluded.

Indeed, strangers should not be allowed into the home if possible, as this reduces the likelihood that a theft will take place.
