Volvo has made a number of ambitious predictions for the coming three decades in terms of improving road safety, as it celebrates 30 years of seat belt laws in the UK.

A poll carried out by the company in commemoration of this milestone has examined the nation's predictions for safety in the future, with more than half of respondents stating they would be happy to see the introduction of driverless vehicles on the UK's roads.

However, 60 per cent said they believe it is unlikely traffic accidents will ever be fully eradicated.

Volvo Car UK managing director Nick Connor commented: "It is perhaps not surprising the majority of British motorists think the introduction of vehicles which make accidents virtually a thing of the past is not possible, but I have every faith in Volvo to prove them wrong!"

Research carried out by the AA this month also revealed that 95 per cent of Britons now fully accept the fact that seat belts save lives – a striking development given the difficulties which seat belt laws faced when they were first introduced.
