Vehicle manufacturer Volvo has secured this year's prestigious Fleet Safety Initiative of the Year award for its V40 pedestrian airbag technology.

The Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO) bestowed the honour on the company at its 29th annual awards ceremony, which took place earlier this week.

It follows the award of the highest ever Euro NCAP safety rating for the Volvo V40, with the model incorporating a number of innovative new features, including the pedestrian airbag and its automated low-speed emergency braking system.

James Shires, national corporate sales operations manager at Volvo Car UK, said: "Volvo is committed to protecting driver, passenger and pedestrian safety and we are thrilled our world-first pedestrian airbag technology has been recognised publicly by ACFO."

Last month, the company was also named winner of the 2012 Thatcham International Vehicle Security Award.

It was honoured for the mechanical and electronic security of its vehicles, as well as the identifiable nature of its components.
