British drivers appear to be underestimating the long-term implications of submitting a whiplash claim.
Figures compiled by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) showed that of the £10.7 billion that was accrued through motoring claims in 2011, £2.2 billion was directly attributed to whiplash victims.
Some 1,500 people lodge complaints about neck injuries suffered in car accidents every single day and this is forcing insurance premiums upwards.
The ABI stated that whiplash claims now add £90 to the average vehicle insurance quote.
In written evidence submitted to MPs, the ABI said there are numerous things that have catalysed the whiplash epidemic in Britain.
"The first factor is the dysfunctional compensation system which has led to a growing compensation culture in the UK," it noted.
With the overall cost of vehicle ownership continuing to rise, some motorists – particularly younger ones – are finding their annual insurance payments a real burden.
To counteract this, some people have adopted telematics-based policies, which utilise recording equipment to monitor a driver's behaviour, thus preventing motorists from being stereotyped because of their age.
