A new campaign has been launched by GEM Motoring Assist to help raise awareness of the dangers of children going unseen by motorists during the darker winter months.

The new Glow Home Safely drive is aimed at providing youngsters with glow-in-the-dark clothing to help them stand out when they are out and about after dark.

Motorists often complain they are unable to discern children when driving at night and therefore the initiative is aimed at helping to ensure young people are as visible as possible so as to improve their safety.

David Williams, chief executive officer of GEM, added: "Drivers of course need to play their part and be extra vigilant when driving in and around built-up areas and known school run routes – especially around school closing times and in these early weeks of adjustment to the change of clocks."

It follows the publication of new figures from the Department for Transport that estimate scrapping the change from BST to GMT each year could help to prevent around 80 deaths and 200 serious injuries on the UK's roads.
