Hidden-feesFleets are being hit by hidden extra fuel costs, according to The Fuelcard People. Steve Clarke, group marketing manager, said: “Thousands of drivers fill up every day without realising that their fuel cards suppliers have raised prices, imposing an additional transaction charge. Although only a couple of pounds each time, it mounts up. Even a small business with just one or two vehicles could pay hundreds more over the course of a year.”

The transaction charge issue became headline news during 2013, when customers took to the Internet to claim that a fuel card company had introduced transaction charges without warning.

“We had a lot of calls from fleet managers wanting to switch to us,” said Steve Clarke, “because we have always insisted upon clarity and transparency. Many of these told us that they had not been properly informed about the other supplier’s new charges. We are still receiving calls from firms who have only just noticed the extra costs on their invoices.”

Steve Clarke urged fleet managers to check their fuel card invoices for transaction charges and other hidden extras. “If you don’t like what you find,” he said, “ring your dedicated account manager and complain. If you don’t have a dedicated account manager, but are expected to queue for a random call centre operator, take that as yet another sign that it is time to switch suppliers.”
