A new smart motorways network in the north-west of England aims to deliver significant benefits for future users of the M60 and M62 around Manchester, with new overhead signage now in the process of being installed.

Five massive signposts are being erected at key points on the local transport network that will provide instruction and information to future travellers in the area when the new network is brought online.

Each of the eight-metre poles will eventually be topped by a 1.5-tonne variable message sign, which itself will measure 4.5 metres in width by 3.5 metres in height.

Highways England project manager Paul Hampson said: "Currently only the poles are in place and we thought drivers might be curious as to what they are for. The electronic signs that attach to the poles will be going up at a later date.

"Once the smart motorway scheme is up and running, we're confident that road users will find the additional traffic information invaluable.

"The electronic signs will help drivers to make informed decisions about their journeys. This improves safety and helps to keep traffic moving."

Smart motorways are springing up around the country, as the government continues to invest considerable amounts of money into major upgrades for the UK's roads transport network.

With the ability to effectively monitor traffic volumes and to react swiftly in the event of an accident, smart motorways operate variable speed limits and responsive lane closures and openings – including hard shoulder running – to ensure motorists suffer from less congestion and traffic is kept moving more efficiently around the clock.

Set for completion in autumn 2017, the new M60/M62 smart motorway aims to deliver significant benefits for travellers across the north-west in the years ahead.
