Elections for the important position of Mayor of London have been held across the English capital this week.

As a result, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) believes this change in the political landscape represents a perfect opportunity for the mayor's office to work more closely with the UK logistics sector in the coming years.

Highlighting leading issues including the introduction of new clean air zones, the expansion of London airports, HGV regulations and delivery restrictions across the capital, the FTA would like to see far greater collaboration between officials and members of the transport industry in future.

Indeed, the FTA highlighted how in excess of 360,000 tonnes of goods are supplied by lorry in London each day – the equivalent of 15,000 tonnes picked up or dropped off each hour, or 250 tonnes every minute.

Moreover, these figures do not take into account the many vans and other modes of transport that further keep the city moving and operating effectively.

Christopher Snelling, FTA head of national and regional policy and public affairs, said: "Our manifesto sets out how we can help to deliver a stronger London, a cleaner London, but also a safer London.

"These things can be done but they are best done through intelligently working together, not through simplistic measures that just make good headlines."

He noted that it is important that the new mayor takes into account the considerable importance of the logistics and transport industries in the smooth running of the nation's capital on a daily basis.
