Highways England engineers will be carrying out a far-reaching improvement scheme for a five-mile stretch of the A1 near Berwick in Northumberland as part of a £1.2 million investment.
Road sign replacement, the installation of new road studs and markings, as well as resurfacing will all be carried out in the coming weeks along the carriageway between the B6525 Oxford junction and Scremerston, where the A1 meets the A1167.
Beginning on September 15th, the project will require the full closure of the A1 between East Ord roundabout and the Scremerston junction between the hours of 20:00 to 06:00 BST each evening for the duration of the first phase of the scheme.
These overnight closures will be required until September 21st, after which the project will move to a single-lane focus and full closures will no longer be enforced.
Overall, the work is scheduled for completion by early November, although travellers in the area are reminded that a temporary 40 mph speed limit will be in place for all road users (around the clock) for the duration of the works.
Highways England project manager Steve Bishop said: "We recognise this is a busy stretch of road and so the work will be done in three phases using a combination of weekend and overnight closures to minimise the disruption where possible.
"When complete, this project will prolong the overall life of the carriageway and improve visibility and safety."
During periods of closure, motorists are asked to follow signposted diversions, which will send travellers via Scremerston village and Tweedemouth, before rejoining the A1.
