New data has highlighted ongoing "modest growth" within the UK's van and light commercial (LCV) market during the first month of the new year.

According to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), January witnessed an annual increase of 1.2 per cent in new LCV sales, achieving a total of 21,363 units.

At the same time, demand has grown considerably in both the pick-up and heavy van segments, with an annual upturn of 28.9 per cent (3,439 units) and 5.6 per cent (12,617 units) respectively.

Responding to the data, SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "Vans are the backbone of British business so it is positive to see the strength of the market continue into 2017.

"With the success of the sector so closely linked to business confidence, government must ensure the conditions that have delivered this growth are maintained."

Overall, the Ford Transit Custom remained the nation's most popular LCV in January, followed by the Ford Transit, Ford Transit Connect, Vauxhall Vivaro and Volkswagen Transport.

Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "Vans and light commercial vehicles are the lifeblood of fleets operating up and down the UK.

"It is therefore extremely positive news to see how this segment continues to gain strength, as more new vehicles enter into daily use."
