New data published by the Department for Transport (DfT) has highlighted the significant growth in car ownership that has taken place in the last 20 years.

Overall, the figures showed there has been a 19 per cent increase in the number of vehicles on the nation's roads since 1995, while the total number of vehicle miles travelled in 2015 rose by 1.1 per cent from the previous year to a new record high of 247.7 billion.

This marks a considerable increase in driving activities across the UK in recent years, with road safety charity Brake therefore keen to ensure all road users are aware of their responsibilities every time they get behind the wheel.

Indeed, the rise in vehicle numbers and levels of traffic means the number of interactions between road users and pedestrians is now larger than ever, with the chances that accidents could leave individuals injured or killed therefore rising.

Responding to the DfT's data, campaigns adviser at Brake Alice Bailey stated: "These new figures show our message of 'drive less live more' is more pertinent than ever.

"We have record car usage in the UK along with all the congestion and pollution this brings. More traffic means more risks to vulnerable road users and danger to the health of both individuals and the planet."

She added that taking the time to ensure drivers act responsibly and safely at all times is therefore now more important than ever.
