The creation of a new migrant camp at Dunkirk ferry port in France could place increasing pressure on UK logistics providers, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) has claimed.
RHA chief executive Richard Burnett stated that plans by the French authorities to begin building the new camp could lead to further difficulties for UK hauliers in the months ahead, as further unrest is likely to be seen in the area.
He added that the situation at Calais has become untenable in recent months, with migrant numbers swelling to more than 18 to one in comparison to security officials that are meant to be keeping the peace.
However, with the creation of a new camp less than 30 miles from the current areas of major disruption, it is inevitable that more unrest will be seen in the near future.
"This is now a critical situation, which cannot be allowed to continue," Mr Burnett argued. "The lives and livelihoods for hauliers and for thousands of Calaisians are now being put at severe risk."
As a result, the RHA chief concluded that the French government must now prioritise further investment in security measures for travellers through the region, with businesses suffering from significant disruption to their operations due to migrant behaviour during recent months.
