Drivers who exceed the speed limit on a regular basis are far more likely to be involved in a serious accident, new research has revealed.
According to a new study carried out by Insure the Box, individuals who speed just 20 per cent of the time are increasing their overall likelihood of becoming involved in an incident on the roads by a staggering 87 per cent.
Moreover, while many people may only exceed the speed limit on occasion, for those who do so just ten per cent of the time, they too are increasing their risk by 42 per cent.
Habitual speeders are therefore significantly raising their chances of an accident and these people need to be aware that is not simply themselves that can be affected; their passengers, pedestrians and other road users can all suffer serious consequences as a result of their actions.
The findings were based on driver data gleaned from the telematics devices of drivers insured with the company.
Responding to the research, Insure the Box road safety manager Simon Rewell commented: "There are still far too many young men and women killed or seriously injured on our roads."
Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "It is imperative motorists stick to the speed limit and always apply common sense when taking to the roads.
"With the autumn now upon us and the darker nights, drivers need to remember to tailor their speed to their surroundings and always be able to stop within the distance they can see ahead."
