A new study conducted by Nissan UK has shown there are certain sections of society that could benefit greatly from self-driving cars, with vehicles fitted with autonomous technology helping to enhance the lives of several groups.

According to Nissan's findings, improved mobility for the disabled (56 per cent), the visually impaired (42 per cent) and the elderly (30 per cent) were among the chief benefits that this technology will bring.

However, for 60 per cent of respondents, the introduction of driverless cars is expected to improve the mobility of everyone, regardless of their individual circumstances.

Managing director of Nissan GB Alex Smith commented: "These results are pleasantly optimistic, particularly with regards identifying the benefits to users who will rely on the technology more, such as the elderly or the impaired.

"The fact that more than one in seven buyers are already considering some kind of autonomously-equipped car for their next purchase also demonstrates an enthusiasm for these new innovations."

Overall, 33 per cent of respondents stated they are 'excited' at the prospect of self-driving cars, while 51 per cent believe the technology will help to reduce the number of accidents on the nation's roads.

Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "Driverless cars will be a game-changer in the coming years and could lead to some surprising benefits that many people may not have yet realised."
