The UK has an ageing population and that means more and more people are continuing to drive well into their golden years.

This, in itself, is no bad thing, as driving helps to give freedom to us all to travel where we want, when we want. However, breakdown and recovery specialist GEM Motoring Assist is now calling on people across the country to be more aware of the dangers that age can bring for motorists.

GEM road safety officer Neil Worth commented: "We want as many people as possible to enjoy the freedom of the open road for as long as possible, but only while they are safe.

"Warning signs relating to failing health or reduced ability can develop slowly and gradually in older drivers. This often means they won't be aware of their changing actions or the growing risks they may pose – to themselves and to others – on journeys."

As a result, family members are being encouraged to be the ones to take action should they see the signs that older drivers are beginning to become unsafe on the roads.

It can be a difficult conversation to have with anyone, but ultimately they need to do the right thing and help drivers of all ages to understand the importance of hanging up their car keys when they lack the ability to drive safely.

Ben Robb, brand manager at The Fuelcard People, adds: "Older motorists have years of invaluable experience and are some of the safest out there. But when age catches up to you, this can result in decreased reaction times and deteriorating vision, so we should all be aware of when it's time to stop driving."
