Summer is meant to be in full swing across the UK right now, but many people will not be surprised to see the forecasts filled with talks of rain and wet weather – this is Britain after all.

As a result, driver training and automotive safety organisation IAM RoadSmart has offered some helpful tips to ensure road users up and down the country are able to stay safe when out and about, no matter what the weather throws at them.

When the heavens open it is important for travellers to remain calm and ease back on their speed – always remembering to drive appropriately to the conditions of the road is essential for safe journeys.

Other helpful recommendations include always being wary of entering into areas with potentially flooded roads, as travellers can never be sure how deep the water will become ahead of them, leaving both themselves and their vehicle potentially stranded.

It is also important to remember that stopping distances will be significantly increased in wet weather. Therefore, increase following distances to other traffic and always be prepared to take action if you see others doing so in front.

IAM RoadSmart head of driving and riding standards Richard Gladman concluded: "Driving in wet weather can be challenging, and with delays and increased concentration needed it can be more tiring too. By allowing increased time to stop and extending your following distance you can remain safe."
