Fleet managers across the country should drive home the message that complacency and over-confidence behind the wheel will not be tolerated and can have severe consequences.

Road safety charity Brake has revealed new research showing how 99 per cent of motorists across the UK believe themselves to be at least as safe a driver as the average road user.

However, at the same time, it reveals more than two-thirds (69 per cent) admit to breaking traffic laws on a regular basis.

Overall, 35 per cent of those who regularly flout the rules stated they do so because they believe "they can handle it", while for a further third it is simply down to a lack of concentration.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive at Brake, commented in response: "Anyone who thinks they can handle speeding, using a phone at the wheel or drink-driving is fooling themselves and taking an appalling chance with people's lives."
