Motoring safety and recovery organisation the AA has welcomed the publication of the government's new report examining the extent of whiplash injury claims on the UK insurance sector.

It stated fraudulent claims have played a part in raising the average cost of premiums for all vehicle owners in recent years, but the industry must also be sensitive to the fact that many hundreds of genuine claimants do come forward each year and this group should not be discriminated against.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, responded: "I have always emphasised the need to ensure that those who have a legitimate claim should not be put off from seeking the compensation for their injury that they deserve."

He added the report's recommendations that the process of making a claim be made more rigorous would benefit both consumers and the industry, helping to address the imbalance at present between real injuries and those individuals simply looking to make a "quick buck".
