Drivers are becoming increasingly concerned about the carbon dioxide emissions of vehicles.

Research by HPI found 38 per cent of customers are asking dealers about the environmental credentials of the cars they are looking to buy.

However, the primary motivation for this is not a desire to embrace a greener way of life, but instead they are usually thinking about the financial implications.

While 77 per cent of dealers admitted there is greater awareness of CO2 emissions, 85 per cent of them think this is because of the tax benefits associated with green vehicles.

On top of this, only 13 per cent of dealers said CO2 emissions are not an important factor, highlighting how serious an issue it is.

Daniel Burgess, managing director of HPI, said: "It's clear to see that CO2 now has more of an impact on a customer's purchase decision, but many dealers are missing a trick by not offering this data."
