New research published by CAP Automotive has revealed cash-strapped motorists up and down the UK are putting economy ahead of all other factors when determining new car purchases.

The considerations of those investing in a new vehicle have changed significantly over recent years, with the cost of running now the chief concern among buyers, moving ahead of previously popular concerns including handling, style and practicality.

Indeed, in a 2013 ranking of the top 16 concerns for buyers, image came in at 15th.

This shows the extent to which the economic downturn has coloured consumer attitudes at present, with many cash-strapped drivers looking to get the most for their money over the lifetime of their vehicle.

CAP Automotive representative Nick Flood commented: "Even we were surprised at these findings because factors like practicality, handling, image and styling have historically been right at the top of the list of reasons for choosing a particular car."
