Vehicle manufacturer Ford has announced extremely positive performance in terms of new car sales during October, boosting its year-to-date figures in comparison to 2011 and overall market share.

The company reported a 12.3 per cent increase in its October sales to 151,252 units, bringing up its total so far for the year to more than 1.7 million vehicles.

Overall, the company remains unchallenged in the UK's commercial vehicle sector, claiming a 24 per cent market share for 2012 and 34 per cent share in October alone.

Ford of Britain managing director Mark Ovenden commented: "It is a credit to Ford's outstanding product line-up and its dealer partners that Ford's market lead has been strengthened during this period of intense rivalry for sales."

Last month, the Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 5dr was awarded the honour of being named What Car?'s Used Car of the Year 2012.

The Ford S-Max came top in the publication's best used MPV category.
