The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice to road users on how best to deal with taking to roads during icy conditions.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "Some bits of the country have already had a first taste of this year's winter. That means it's time for the rest of us to start thinking about how to deal with it too."
As a result, the organisation advises drivers need to remember that stopping distances can be up to ten times longer than in the dry when it is icy, while many roads that are slightly off the beaten track may not be gritted as often as more well-travelled routes, so this is something drivers need to be aware of.
Moreover, it is important for all motorists to remember to pack de-icer and a scraper in their vehicle at this time of year, as no-one should take to the roads when their windscreen and mirrors are covered in ice.
