Many motorists up and down the country are labouring under a false premise that the same laws apply to heavy goods vehicles as they do standard cars.
Indeed, research published by AA DriveTech revealed 81 per cent of drivers are unaware that the legal speed limit for a lorry on a single carriageway in the UK is just 40 mph – even when the road has a higher limit signposted for other road users.
In response, AA DriveTech managing director Jim Kirkwood commented: "Many drivers say they feel intimidated by lorries. But this research highlights how a lack of understanding of the laws surrounding lorries, and how best to drive around them, could be contributing to this."
He added many people can also be left frustrated when following what they perceive to be slow moving large lorries on roads. However, it is important to remember these vehicles are simply abiding by the law by travelling at these speeds.
