New data published by Transport for London (TfL) has highlighted a considerable improvement in road safety across the capital in the last year.
According to the organisation's statistics for 2013, last year witnessed an annual 23 per cent reduction in the number of people either killed or seriously injured (KSIs) on London's roads – bringing the total number of KSIs down to its lowest ever annual result.
In addition, the volume of reported pedestrian KSIs during 2013 also fell by 25 per cent in comparison to the previous year, while the total number of accidents reported across the capital's road network was five per cent lower than in 2012.
All in all, the statistics highlighted an improving outlook for road safety in the Greater London area, but this did not stop mayor of London Boris Johnson calling for further improvements in the years to come.
He said: "These latest road casualty statistics are hugely encouraging, but they are by no means the end of the story.
"Our ultimate goal is to see a London where roads are free from death and serious injury, which is why we're investing significant funding to make the road network fit for the 21st century."
Managing director of surface transport at TfL Leon Daniels added that ensuring as many people as possible are spared the pain and heartache of losing a loved one as a result of a road traffic accident remains a top priority.
Indeed, he highlighted a range of initiatives that are now being utilised to bring about further safety benefits to the capital's residents and visitors alike, including the use of new segregated cycle lanes and improvements to junctions to better safeguard vulnerable road users.
