Volvo Trucks has announced improved figures for its delivery of vehicles in January 2012 in comparison to the same month last year.

The firm revealed a five per cent increase in delivery rates to 6,822 trucks, while the firm's European sales increased by six per cent to 2,961 vehicles.

A company statement read: "Underlying demand remains at a good level, driven primarily by the need to replace the industry's ageing highway truck population."

Volvo added that the manufacturer is continuing to draw in new customers due to its focus on fuel economy coupled with excellent performance. It added that the introduction of the manufacturer's proprietary I-Shift automated manual transmission and bespoke engine designs are also a factor in this growth.

Earlier this month, Volkswagen Group announced a similar increase in its delivery levels for January 2012 – up by 1.3 per cent year-on-year.

In total, the manufacturer delivered 652,500 new vehicles during the month.
